Dusti Calander
I MADE THIS JUST FOR YOU
Always one-of-one
Dusti,
My name is Beau Thistle. I’m a custom shoe artist based in Austin, Texas, and what I do is take people’s stories and bring them to life through artwork they can actually wear. I wanted to start this letter by introducing myself, because I don’t think you’ll fully feel what this piece means until you know the level of detailed thought that went into this project, thanks to Jennifer.
Jennifer first discovered my work after seeing my business on the local Texas news station. She reached out because she wasn’t looking for a logo on a pair of shoes. She wanted to create something that actually told Dusti’s story.
During our consultation, it became immediately clear how deeply Jennifer admires Dusti and everything she has overcome to become the woman she is today.
Dusti spent part of her childhood working alongside her grandparents with their tree trimming businesses. Her father owned a brick company, and even after being told that it was a man’s world and hearing “no” more times than she should have, she continued building a life of her own. She went on to attend Texas A&M and ultimately founded her own successful financial company, Calendar Wealth.
That’s where the foundation for the artwork came from.
Brick by brick.
The antique brick pattern represents every chapter of Dusti’s life. Every hardship, every decision, every person who helped shape her, and every obstacle she had to overcome to build the life she has today.
Even the colors were intentional. I wanted the brickwork to feel aged, warm, imperfect, and authentic rather than clean and modern. There is history in old brick. It carries evidence of everything it has survived, which felt incredibly fitting for Dusti’s story.
Throughout the design, I engraved smaller details that represent important pieces of her life, including Calendar Wealth and the year it was established, Texas A&M, and 2021, the year Dusti and Jennifer’s relationship began.
Jennifer never asked me to include her own name, but after hearing the way she spoke about Dusti during our consultation, I knew she belonged somewhere in this story too. This pair exists because of the way Jennifer sees and celebrates her, so I incorporated her name subtly into the artwork.
One of my favorite details came from digging even deeper into Dusti’s story. Jennifer told me that Dusti reminds her of the goddess Athena. Athena is often associated with the olive tree and olive branch, so I used that symbolism to connect several pieces of Dusti’s life together.
The trees pay tribute to the business she worked on with her grandparents. The olive branch represents Athena. And perched naturally within the branches is the Calendar Wealth bird, allowing her company to become part of the artwork without simply placing a corporate logo on the shoe.
From a distance, it may look like one cohesive, vintage-inspired piece of artwork.
Up close, every single detail represents something.
Her childhood.
Her family.
Her education.
Her career.
Her relationship.
Her resilience.
A life that wasn’t handed to her. A life she built, brick by brick.
Thank you for letting me be part of this. I would absolutely love to hear what you think of the shoes so I could add to my collection of reviews.
